The Old Gold, the yearbook from the Iowa State Teacher’s College, found another difference as the WAVE boot camp transformed into a Yeoman training facility in Spring 1943: the better weather meant the women were using the quads outdoors for their marching drills.

By Spring of 1943, the WAVES boot camp at Cedar Falls had been transformed into a yeoman training facility. And Old Gold, the yearbook for the Iowa State Teacher’s College, found them “smart, snappy, and plenty neat.”

And by Winter term, this is what Bartlett Hall looked like. As the the 1943 edition of Old Gold reminds us, the dorm at the Iowa State Teacher’s College was transformed into a home for WAVES-in-training, first in boot camp and later in the Yeoman training school.

The Uniform

Everywhere WAVES went, the uniform was commented on. It was designed by couture designer Mainbocher. And the Old Gold , the yearbook from the Iowa State Teacher’s College, dedicated a page in its 1943 yearbook to what the WAVES wore.

Boot Training

It was a big change for students Iowa State Teacher’s College in fall of 1942. Imagine heading to campus and seeing a sea of uniforms. The Old Gold, the yearbook for the Iowa State Teachers College, showed how some of the residents in campus halls had changed, and how the Navy is keeping things “shipshape.”
