This paperwork from the U.S. Naval Training School in the Bronx for WAVES (at the former Hunter College) outlines the schedule for religious services. Note there are only three options: Catholic, Protestant and Jewish. It dates from June 11, 1943.

It comes from the special collections in the Schlesinger Library at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.

WAVES Barracks

San Francisco during World War II was a military town. And while many were bunked at places like Treasure Island, for some WAVES the crush of military personnel meant they lived in the city, off base.

This is an aerial of the WAVES’ barracks at the Western Women’s Club in San Francisco, looking northeast.

Gunnery School

WAVES in training at the Aviation Gunnery School in Pensacola, Florida, learn the operation of the projectors used in synthetic gunnery training devices (an early version of virtual reality). The women will later serve as instructors at training centers throughout the country.
